Rise Up, Shepherd, and Follow for flute sextet

Sometimes known as There’s a Star in the East, this popular Spiritual first appeared in print in 1867. The tune most likely originated in the plantations on islands off the coasts of Georgia and North Carolina. Typically, this was sung as a solo phrase, alternating with a response from the choir and accompanied by plenty of clapping and foot patting. There’s a star in the East on Christmas morn, Rise up, shepherd, and follow. It will lead to the place where the Christ was born, Rise up, shepherd, and follow.
